Zambia’s Scott, once Africa’s only white leader, dies at 82
Zambia bids a final farewell to a distinguished statesman, Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott, who passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the age of 82. The government confirmed his death, noting that he died at his farm in Lusaka's Leopards Hill area after an illness. Dr. Scott's demise marks the end of an era for a figure who left an indelible mark on the nation's political landscape, earning recognition for his sharp intellect, candid nature, and unwavering commitment to public service. Born on June 1, 1944, in Livingstone, then Northern Rhodesia, Dr. Scott was an economist, farmer, and politician whose public life spanned over three decades. Dr. Scott's political career saw him co-found the Lima Party and help establish the Zambia Alliance for Progress before joining the Patriotic Front (PF) in 2001. His partnership with the late President Michael Sata proved pivotal, culminating in his appointment as Vice President in 2011, making him the first white Zambian to hold this office since independence. However, it was in 2014, following President Sata's death, that Dr. Scott etched his name into history, becoming Zambia's acting president. This made him Africa's first white head of state since F.W. de Klerk in South Africa, a role he held until January 2015. During his brief but constitutionally significant period as acting president, Dr. Scott guided the nation through a delicate period of mourning and ensured a peaceful and orderly
