Update: Malambo East MP Faith Lungu says she beat Mike Mposha "fair and square"
Faith Lungu, the Independent Member of Parliament for Malambo East, has rejected a claim by former Munali MP Mike Mposha that he actually won the seat in the August general election. In a statement issued on Sunday, she said she beat Mr Mposha fair and square. According to the figures given in the report, Ms Lungu was declared the winner with 7,118 votes against 5,091 for Mr Mposha, who stood on the UPND ticket. That is a gap of 2,027 votes. Mr Mposha is a former Minister of Green Economy and Environment. Mr Mposha said recently that he believes he won Malambo East but decided not to file an election petition because he did not want to divide the people of the constituency. Ms Lungu argued that this claim carries a risk for the government he served in. If a UPND figure says he won a seat that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) gave to someone else, she said, it suggests that the commission is compromised, and that would undermine the government. No court challenge to the Malambo East result has been reported. ## Why it matters A losing candidate saying publicly that he won, with no case before a court, leaves voters in Malambo East with a confusing message about who represents them. The exchange also feeds a wider argument over whether results declared by the ECZ can be trusted, a question that matters to every voter who queued in August and to the credibility of the next by-election. ## What happens next No petition is pending, so Ms Lungu remains the MP. The report carried no response from the ECZ or the UPND to her statement. Source: News Diggers, 26 October 2026, 08:00.
