Magnate charged and arrested after serious road accident in Salama Park of Lusaka, police say
The Zambia Police Service has confirmed the arrest and formal charging of Suzyo Shawa, a 31-year-old resident of New Kasama popularly known in entertainment circles as Magnate, following a high-impact road traffic accident in Lusaka's upscale Salama Park residential area. The collision, which occurred along Ginger Street, left a 19-year-old cyclist battling injuries and receiving urgent medical attention at the Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital. According to preliminary police reports, the incident unfolded when the luxury Range Rover driven by Shawa was involved in an improper overtaking manoeuvre, ultimately striking the young cyclist who was attempting to cross the roadway. The impact left the victim with significant trauma, including a deep cut to the forehead, multiple facial and bodily bruises, and generalized physical pain. Authorities noted that while the cyclist sustained serious injuries, the driver emerged from the crash unhurt. The collision resulted in substantial material damage to both properties involved. The luxury vehicle suffered extensive impacts to its front fascia, including the bonnet, grille, radiator, and number plate, while the victim's bicycle was completely mangled under the force of the collision. Responding officers swiftly secured the scene, impounded the Range Rover, and transferred it to the Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Police Station, where it awaits comprehensive re-examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA). Zambia Police Service spokesperson Chipo Kaitisha emphasized that formal statements have been recorded from the driver as full-scale investigations into the precise sequence of events continue. Law enforcement has reiterated stern warnings to motorists across the capital, urging heightened vigilance, strict adherence to speed limits, and increased caution around vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. This unfortunate incident has reignited intense public discourse surrounding road safety compliance
