REV. VIOLET SAMPA-BREDT:THE FIRST WOMAN TO BE ORDAINED MINISTER IN UCZ …AND RUBBED THE CHURCH THE WRONG WAY
The legacy of the late Reverend Violet Sampa-Bredt remains a towering pillar in the history of both Zambian Christianity and national politics. As the first woman to be ordained as a minister in the United Church of Zambia (UCZ), Rev. Sampa-Bredt broke long-standing glass ceilings in a male-dominated religious landscape. Her journey into the ministry was characterized by fierce dedication, theological rigor, and an unwavering commitment to pastoral care that often brought her into direct friction with conservative elements within church structures. Reflecting on her pioneering tenure, Rev. Her ability to navigate complex social challenges cemented her reputation as a fearless advocate for the vulnerable, paving the way for numerous women who aspired to leadership roles in spiritual spaces. Transitioning from the pulpit to the arena of representative democracy, Rev. Sampa-Bredt further expanded her public service footprint by contesting and winning the Chawama parliamentary seat in 2006 under the Patriotic Front (PF) ticket. As a
