State-owned telecommunications giant Zamtel has officially introduced three pioneering digital services under its new 'Zamtel Firsts' initiative, marking a significant milestone in the country's telecommunications and fintech landscape. The unveiling event, held at Zamtel Park in Lusaka, introduces Kongola Malaiti, an enhanced MyZamtel Super App, and a flexible custom packaging feature dubbed Create Your Own Bundle. These innovations are designed to give consumers greater control over their telecommunications needs while driving everyday digital and financial inclusion across the nation. Among the standout innovations is Kongola Malaiti, a service accessible via the *115# USSD channel that allows eligible Zamtel customers to borrow electricity units directly through their mobile phones when faced with sudden power depletion. This utility-focused fintech solution bridges a critical gap in a market where energy access and convenience are paramount. Additionally, the upgraded MyZamtel Super App integrates standard account management with Zamtel Money wallets, bills, cashbacks, and utility payments into a single, secure platform, streamlining user experience and protecting personal and financial data. Speaking at the official launch, Ministry of Technology and Science Permanent Secretary Dr. Brilliant Habeenzu hailed the rollout as a testament to homegrown innovation supporting the government's digital agenda and the broader Grow Zambia Agenda. Dr. Habeenzu noted that Zambia's mobile subscriptions have surged from 20.2 million in 2021 to over 26 million, while internet subscriptions grew from 10.4 million to 14.7 million.
