Zambia's financial markets have received a significant international endorsement as J.P. Morgan prepares to include the country in its newly minted Government Bond Index–Emerging Markets (GBI-EM) Edge index. This prominent benchmark is designed to track nearly US$330 billion in local-currency government debt across 26 frontier economies globally, with African markets projected to account for nearly 45 percent of the coverage. For Lusaka, this inclusion marks a critical turning point, transitioning financial narratives from post-default restructuring anxiety toward renewed global integration and market confidence. Achieving qualification for the index was no small feat for the Zambian Treasury and the Bank of Zambia. J.P. Morgan enforces strict criteria for inclusion, requiring eligible government bonds to meet specific liquidity thresholds, including a minimum outstanding value of US$250 million equivalent and at least two-and-a-half years remaining to maturity. Initially, individual Zambian bond sizes hovered below these thresholds, posing a risk of exclusion. However, strategic adjustments by monetary authorities—specifically increasing the volume of domestic bond issuances to create deeper, more liquid benchmark securities—enabled the country to clear the hurdle successfully. For international institutional investors, major bond indices serve as vital navigational tools for portfolio allocation and performance measurement. By joining the GBI-EM Edge index, Zambian kwacha-denominated government securities will gain direct visibility among global asset managers who may not have previously considered frontier-market allocations in Southern Africa.
