‘POLITICAL ENTITLEMENT TO RULE IS DANGEROUS’ – CHIFIRE

Governance expert Gregory Chifire has warned against what he describes as a dangerous sense of political or tribal entitlement, where certain groups or individuals believe they have an inherent right to govern Zambia. Speaking on recent political dynamics, Chifire emphasized that leadership must be earned through democratic processes, merit, and a genuine commitment to serving the citizenry rather than sectional interests. Chifire noted that historical and contemporary political landscapes in Zambia have occasionally been marred by parochial sentiments, which undermine the foundational motto of 'One Zambia, One Nation.' He stressed that ethnic or regional entitlement fosters polarization, disenfranchises other citizens, and diverts national attention from critical socio-economic challenges such as job creation, cost of living, and sustainable development. The governance activist called upon political leaders across the divide to actively discourage rhetoric that promotes tribal division or a monolithic view of power. He urged civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and ordinary citizens to hold aspirants accountable, championing inclusivity and national cohesion above partisan loyalty. Furthermore, analysts point out that Zambia's pluralistic democracy relies heavily on the active participation of all citizens regardless of their geographic or ethnic origins. The erosion of this principle through entitlement mentalities poses a subtle yet potent threat to the peaceful democratic transitions that the country has proudly maintained since the return to multiparty politics in 1991. As the political landscape continues to evolve, stakeholders are urged to reflect on the dangers of exclusionary politics.
