SINDA, Eastern Province – In a disturbing incident that underscores the volatile intersection of community justice and political campaigning, an independent parliamentary candidate for Kapoche constituency, Stephen Miti, has seen his campaign vehicle torched by enraged villagers in Chieftainess Kawaza's area of Sinda District. The vehicle was allegedly suspected of being used for cattle rustling, a pervasive issue in rural Zambia, leading to its complete destruction along with significant campaign materials and a substantial sum of over K126,000 in cash. According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba, the driver of the vehicle had initially parked it at a local football pitch before moving it into the village on the advice of residents. However, suspicions quickly arose among the villagers regarding the vehicle's alleged involvement in cattle theft. The driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled when confronted by the angry mob and finding the road impassable. Mr. Miti, the parliamentary candidate, arrived later to find his vehicle engulfed in flames, a stark end to his campaign outreach in that area. This incident casts a harsh light on the challenges faced by political aspirants, particularly in remote areas where community tensions can rapidly escalate. While the primary alleged motive appears to be related to cattle theft, the destruction of a political candidate's property during an election cycle inevitably raises questions about the broader implications for political stability and the rule of law. Sinda District, located in Zambia's Eastern Province, is predominantly an agricultural area, making cattle a vital asset for many families, and incidents of rustling often provoke strong community reactions. Police have since initiated an inquiry and launched a full investigation into the matter to ascertain the precise circumstances leading to the arson and to identify those responsible.
